Town
and Village of Newark Valley
The Town of Newark Valley consists of 50.33 square miles and is
located on the east side of the County. The Town is bordered by
Broome County to the east, the Town of Owego to the south, the Town
of Candor's hamlet of Weltonville to the west, and the Town of Berkshire
to the north. The 2000 Census states that the population was 4,097.
The main tourist attraction in the Town is the Bement Billings Farmstead,
which hosts the annual sheep dog trials in the Spring and Apple
Festival in the Fall in an original 1800's farmhouse setting. The
Newark Valley Historical Society is conducting an aggressive capital
fundraising campaign to turn the Bement Billings Farmstead into
a major visitor attraction and learning center. The Newark Valley
Central School offers high quality education to the children of
Newark Valley, Berkshire, and Richford. The Town is primarily rural
with some portions of the Town providing a suburban setting for
residents who commute to their jobs in the area.
The Village of Newark Valley consists of .96 square miles within
the Town and has a population of 1,071 according to the 2000 Census.
The Village has some spectacular historic buildings and has recently
seen the establishment of a trendy cyber-café and a natural
foods store. These are certainly signs that the Village is poised
for some new retail establishments that will further improve the
quality of life for area residents. The Village owns a spectacular
park called Trout Ponds that is a setting for numerous events and
recreational activities.
