Town and Village of Nichols

The Town of Nichols consists of 33.7 square miles and is located between the Susquehanna River to the north and west, the Town of Owego to the east, and Bradford County, Pennsylvania to the south. According to the 2000 Census the population is 2,584 people. Beginning in March 2003, the Town's major employer will be the Best Buy Warehouse and Distribution Center in the hamlet of Lounsbury. Agriculture and gravel mining are the other major industries in the Town. The Tioga Country Club is a public golf course that offers spectacular views of the Susquehanna River Valley. The former horse racing track known as Tioga Park along I-86 offers weekend flea markets and the racetrack grandstands are an under-used venue with tremendous potential to draw people for special events from throughout the Twin Tiers of New York and Pennsylvania.

The Village of Nichols consists of .51 square miles within the Town and has a population of 574 according to the 2000 Census. The main intersection in the Village is the County road known as River Road and NYS Route 282, which lead to Pennsylvania. The Cady Library located on River Road is a significant architectural treasure that has been transformed from a turn-of-the-century residential mansion to a first-class library facility. Village-owned Kirby Park offers residents a community park for all types of recreational activities and has recently been the host for the Annual Tioga County Antique Tractor Show. Some of the best food in Tioga County can be found at the Barstow House and the former train station was recently renovated into a pub and restaurant.
