Town
of Richford
The Town of Richford consists of 38.17 square miles and is located
at the northeast corner of the County. Richford is bordered by Broome
County to the east, Cortland County to the north, Tompkins County
to the west, and the Town of Berkshire to the south. The center
of town is the intersection of NYS Routes 38 and 79 in the hamlet
of Richford and residents travel to all four points of the compass
for work. The 2000 Census states that the population is 1,170. The
Michigan Hill State Forest encompasses 25% of the Town and is great
for hiking and cross-country skiing. The old Richford Schoolhouse
on Route 38 in the hamlet is being restored thanks to the help of
volunteers from Lockheed Martin, a $12,000 grant from the Margaret
Truman Faulkner Foundation, and Town residents. The Town hosts an
annual potato festival and boasts about being the birthplace of
John D. Rockefeller. Some of the highest elevations in the County
of 1,400 feet or more can be found in Richford.
