MEDIA RELEASE: Potentially Rabid Coyote in Tioga County, NY

On September 09, 2026, multiple reports of a coyote exhibiting abnormal behavior near Cranes Nest area in Candor, New York were reported to Tioga County Public Health.

Based on the coyote’s behavior, it is suspected to be infected with rabies, a fatal disease that is spread through the bite or scratch of an infected animal.

Residents residing in and around Cranes Nest area in Candor should:

• Keep pets indoors and ensure they are up to date on their rabies vaccination.
• Avoid outdoor activities in the area.
• Avoid any wildlife.

If you encounter a coyote or any other wild animal that appears injured or in need of help:

• Keep a safe distance and vacate the area.
• Contact the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) at 1-315-426-7400 (regular office hours), 1‑877‑457-5680 (after office hours).
• If the animal appears to be in immediate danger or poses a risk to humans or pets, contact local law enforcement for assistance.
• Report the incident to Tioga County Public Health at 607-687-8600.

As a reminder, all potential rabies exposures, including bites and scratches, must be reported to Tioga County Public Health by calling 607‑687‑8600 during business hours or 607‑687‑1010 after hours, on weekends, or on holidays. An online Rabies Exposure Bite Form is also available at ph.tiogacountyny.gov. 

Tioga County Public Health is working with the Department of Environmental Conservation on this matter.
